Forums News Discussions 2008 TopCoder Open Embargoed Nations
Embargoed Nations | Reply
The U.S. government has been working on our request (made in September 2007) to allow full participation in the 2008 TCO by members in Iran as mentioned here, but the government has not yet sent a response. We have been following the progress of our request, and last week the department in charge of our case told me that the response is in “final review” and that we should expect to receive it "soon." Unfortunately, we couldn't wait any longer to announce the rules for the TCO, and so the rules that were announced today have again limited participation by members in embargoed nations. We intend to modify the rules to allow increased participation in algorithm competitions by members in Iran (and possibly other embargoed nations) if the government’s response permits us to do so.

Edit: Corrected link.

We just heard back from the US government about our request for permission to have increased participation by members in Iran. Although we did not get permission for everything we asked for, we do have some good news to report.

The government told us that members from Iran are permitted to participate in on-site algorithm competitions, and that TopCoder is allowed to pay for travel and hotel, and even award prizes in the US (if permitted by the member’s visa). As such, we will amend the TCO 2008 Algorithm Competition rules to state that Iranian members are eligible for the on-site round.

Unfortunately, we did not receive permission to award prizes from on-line competitions to members in Iran when they are located in Iran. That restriction in the competition rules will therefore remain unchanged.

We will take a look at the rules for the other restricted nations based on the response we now have about Iran.

Here's wishing members in Iran the best of luck in the arena!

We are really appreciate it.

My country was not banned. So that was nice having to know Iranian people have a chance too.

Thank for TopCoder's effort, Ira.

So now that TopCoder is involved in international politics when are we going to start seeing diplomatic contests where TopCoder members compete to solve the world's political problems?

Well, we already saw that it's surprisingly hard to solve the world's monsters and bunnies problem.
